What is outstanding car finance?
When a vehicle is bought on HP or PCP, the lender holds the legal title for the life of the agreement. The person making monthly payments is the registered keeper on the VRC, but the credit provider is the owner in law — and that ownership does not transfer until the very last payment clears.
For a private buyer, this gap between keeper and owner creates serious risk. The seller has full possession of the car and can show you a VRC in their name — but without legal title, they have no authority to sell it. If you hand over money and the finance remains active, the lender can reclaim the vehicle from you with no obligation to refund your purchase price.
The VRC (Vehicle Registration Certificate) is a keeper record, not a title document. It does not establish who owns the vehicle, and it cannot be used as evidence of the right to sell. A finance company's name rarely appears on the VRC— which is exactly why a dedicated check is essential.
You could lose the car and your money. Once the finance company repossesses the vehicle, the seller — who took your money — is typically impossible to trace.
Finance company is legal owner
Until every payment is cleared, the lender — not the keeper — owns the vehicle.
Seller can't legally transfer title
A seller with outstanding finance has no legal right to sell the car outright.
Repossession risk for the buyer
The finance company can take the car back from you even if you bought in good faith.
VRC does not prove ownership
The registration certificate records the keeper — not the legal owner. Don't rely on it alone.
The Risk of Buying Blind
Outstanding finance is the single biggest financial risk when buying a used car privately.

What actually happens if you buy a car with finance?
Under Irish law, a car on hire purchase (HP) or PCP is legally owned by the finance company — not the seller — until the final payment is made. If you buy that vehicle without checking, the finance company can legally repossess it from you at any time. You'll have no car and no refund from the seller, who by that point is typically impossible to trace.
Types of Finance We Check For
All four common Irish finance agreement types are identified — each carries its own risk profile.
Hire Purchase (HP)
Legal owner: Finance companyFixed monthly payments spread over an agreed term. Legal title stays with the finance company throughout — you only own the car once the final payment clears. HP is the most common agreement type and one of the most frequently found on history checks.
High — lender can repossess at any point before final payment.
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
Legal owner: Finance companyMonthly payments cover the depreciation, not the full value. At the end of the term, you can pay a 'balloon payment' to own the car, hand it back, or use any equity in a new deal. Until the balloon is paid, the finance company is the legal owner.
High — legal ownership never transfers unless the balloon payment is made.
Lease Purchase (LP)
Legal owner: Finance companySimilar to PCP — monthly payments followed by a final balloon payment. Unlike PCP, you are contractually obligated to make the balloon payment at the end. Title only transfers once all payments, including the balloon, are settled.
High — legal title remains with the lender until every payment is complete.
Personal Contract Hire (PCH)
Legal owner: Leasing companyA long-term vehicle rental arrangement where you pay a fixed monthly amount for the use of the car. You never own the vehicle — at the end of the term it is returned to the leasing company. PCH agreements are registered against the vehicle and can result in repossession if payments lapse.
High — you never hold legal title and the leasing company can recover the vehicle if payments fall behind.
What our finance check returns
We search Irish finance registers and return the details you need to make an informed decision.
Lender name
The finance company holding the agreement — the entity with legal ownership of the vehicle.
Agreement type
Whether the finance is HP, PCP, Lease Purchase, logbook loan, or another registered agreement.
Agreement date
When the finance agreement was entered into, helping you assess how much may remain outstanding.
Settlement status
Whether the agreement has been marked as settled by the lender, or remains active.
Company contact
Lender contact details so you can verify the status and request an official settlement letter.
Clear pass/fail result
A definitive outcome — finance found or clear — with a full downloadable PDF report.
If Your Check Shows Finance Found
A finance alert doesn't mean the deal is impossible — but you must act carefully before proceeding.
Don't hand over any money
Money paid to a private seller goes to them — it does not automatically clear the finance. The credit agreement can only be closed by the lender confirming full repayment.
Contact the lender directly
Use the contact details shown on your report — not numbers given by the seller. Confirm whether the agreement is active, settled, or in arrears.
Request a settlement letter
Ask the lender for an official settlement letter confirming the agreement has been fully repaid and their interest released. A genuine seller will support this.
Only proceed when cleared
Once you hold an official settlement letter from the lender — not just a verbal assurance from the seller — it is safe to complete the purchase.
